Bacteriostatic water is a sterile diluent containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, used to reconstitute lyophilised material for laboratory work. The benzyl alcohol acts as a bacteriostatic agent, which allows a sealed multi-dose vial to be drawn from over a working window when sterile technique is followed.
